LOS ANGELES ART CONTEMPORARY
Alden Projects™ Booth D10
Outside the Box: Beyond the White Cube, 1957-1993

Alden Projects™ presents Outside the Box: Beyond the White Cube, 1957 – 1993 at Art Los Angeles Contemporary 2015 (Booth #D10).  This project focuses on artists who deviated from the straight path of art designed for gallery display and whose unconventional distribution strategies extended the space of art beyond the “neutral” boundaries of gallery walls.

These artists disseminated works through the mail, on the streets, on subway walls, as books, as non-sites, on record covers etc.--all of which pushed the boundaries of the (then) conventional limits of art. California artists loom large here: Ed Ruscha’s books (1963-77) are undeniable, signal works. Other highlights include a complete collection of Eleanor Antin’s 100 Boots (1971 – 73) series, consisting of staged photographs that were conceived not as fine art photography, but instead as 51 post cards distributed through the mail over a nearly two year period to hundreds of art world participants. Another milestone is John Baldessari and George Nicolaidis’ Boundary (1969) consisting of 2000 stickers (containing a printed definition of the word “ghetto”) and “installed” along an eleven-mile perimeter of a then unmapped “ghetto”.  A rarely seen remnant is exhibited here. Like most of the work at Alden Projects’ booth, this marker addresses an audience and a space beyond the conventional perimeters of art. Marking differences outside of gallery contexts, Boundary “makes visible what is invisible”  (Baldessari).

Artists include:  Eleanor Antin, John Baldessari, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Enrico Castellani, John Feckner, General Idea, Keith Haring, Jenny Holzer, Sol Lewitt, Piero Manzoni, Gordon Matta-Clark, George Nicolaidis, Ed Ruscha, Robert Smithson, Andy Warhol & The Velvet Underground and Christopher Wool.
